How To Stay On Top Of Household Donations

Donations for a clutter free home

Let's face it, we all have too much stuff.

Clutter is the enemy to home organization.  Pure and simple.  When you find yourself with too much stuff and have things you no longer use or just no longer want, I highly recommend donating the items instead of trashing them - one man’s trash is another man’s treasure!
I find donating frequently helps keeps the home organized and clutter free.  Here's my number one tip to accomplishing this task:

Designate a large container for donations.

The container does not matter.  You can use a laundry basket, a cardboard box, a cute basket, or a trash can.  What matters is that it is large enough to hold many items, everyone knows where it is, and everyone knows what it's for. It should always be in the same location, so pick a spot that makes sense for your home.  For our donation bin, we use a laundry hamper in the mudroom next to the garage door. Everyone knows where it is and what it is for.

My son is currently growing like a weed. When he grows out of his clothes every few months, he gets all the clothes that do not fit anymore and throws them in the bin. When I get a new can opener because I don’t like my old one that works just fine, the old one goes in the bin.  When things get left at my house and no one ever claims them, they go in the bin!  When the bin gets full, I take a trip to my local donation drop off. And the bin starts to fill again.

When you make a donation make sure to get a receipt.  You can write off your donations on your taxes at the end of the year.  They add up so it is definitely worth doing.  Donating has so many benefits.  You get organized, you help your local area, and you get a tax write off!  It's a win-win-win.
A place for everything and everything in it’s place, including donations!
