Closet Organizing Packs Tutorial
Welcome to the closet tutorial! Closets can be very intimidating because there tends to be just so much stuff. So many closets I have organized not only contain clothing but for some reason tend to fill with things that could possibly go elsewhere. And of course sometimes those things end up in the closet because they can’t go anywhere else. Whatever your situation is we can organize it. Here is your pep talk, YOU CAN ORGANIZE YOUR CLOSET! We will guide you through one step at a time. No need to be overwhelmed. Let’s break it down and make this manageable. Ok let’s breathe…
We will be real world organizing a small walk in closet in this video. In The Basics of Organizing Tutorial we covered all of the steps to organizing anything and everything, the first step in the process is to remove everything from the space. We like to combine steps 1 & 2. So as you remove an item, place it into a group. You are about to make an organized mess, but it is what it is. It will get worse before it gets better. Don’t be afraid to use any available space to group your items, the floor and the bed work great.
The closet is empty. We’ve got all our groups…shoes, shirts, pants, accessories, hats etc. Now comes the hardest part for most people, step 3, purging. What will we keep, throw away, donate, or rehome? Statistically most people only wear 20% of their clothes. Clothing tends to be the thing my clients have the hardest time parting with. I get it. You look at an item and remember how much you loved it when you bought it. So why have you not worn it in so long? Are you hanging onto it because you have that deep dark fear that someday it will be just the piece you need to complete an outfit and if it’s gone then what will you possibly do? Reality check, once it is gone you will never think about it again. So here is the tough love I am going to challenge you with…if it is damaged or stained, toss it. If it no longer fits or just doesn’t fit right, donate it. If you haven’t worn it in a year consider getting rid of it. If you haven’t worn it in 2 years, it should be gone.
Once you have purged, the items that remain will be so much easier to see and get to. Let’s move onto step 4 and grab your Oba Closet Pack. It's time to containerize items and put everything away in their groups.
Now is the time when you need to really take a look at your empty closet and see what you have to work with. By that I mean, do you have a lot of hanging space and very few shelves or vice versa? If you don’t have a lot of hanging space but have lots of things on hangers we need to figure out what can come off of the hangers and get put on shelves. Grab your Velvety Stay Put Hangers. Our hangers are low profile so you will be able to fit way more and they grab on to any fabric so no more clothes end up on the floor. Not to mention they are just so attractive. This one change will make such a huge impact. Start with the things that should be hung like dresses, suits, and outerwear. If you still have more hanging space add blouses or dress shirts. Keep adding groups till you are out of hanging space. Everything else needs to go in a drawer, basket or on a shelf.
Before you get to putting things away I’ll tell you how I go about organizing clothing. I organize everything by colors, dark to light. To organize shirts, go by sleeve length - long to short (long sleeve, short sleeve, tank tops, sleeveless). As far as color order, the Oba Method is: black, grey, blue, green, red, orange, yellow, brown, cream, white. All clothing gets the same treatment. So if we are folding sweaters on shelves they can be organized into the same color rainbow. Now you are ready to start putting your clothing back into your closet.
In this closet we are going to be putting pants on shelves. Here is where our Shelf Dividers come in. Simply place one between 2 groups. On one side we’ve got sweats and on the other side jeans. Now onto the folded shirts. Grab your Folding Board for the perfect fold every single time. Shirts stack so nicely when they are properly folded. Simply place the board on the shirt and follow the steps printed right on it.
The Water Hyacinth Baskets are perfect for shoes, bulky sweaters, or even hats.
Most people have a dresser which is why you have adjustable Bamboo Drawer Dividers. Simply place them in a drawer and now you have 2 distinct spaces.
We all tend to have items in our closet that we don’t use all that often but we still need them. That is what the Stacker Bins are for. Like seasonal stuff. Here in Texas the weather is usually pretty warm. But every year we get some cold weather even if it doesn’t last long. We don’t want to take up valuable space with hats and gloves so we can stick them in a Stacker Bin and they can go on a high shelf. No matter where you place them they will still look spectacular with those cute bamboo lids.
Once everything has a home, it is time for the final step, labeling! Grab your Label It! Basket Label Holders and put them on the Water Hyacinth Baskets and then find the applicable label. Our Label It! Closet Labels Pack contains 90 categories and 118 total labels. Put a label on each bin and basket. Now step back and take a look at all that you have accomplished.
And that’s all there is to it. We’ve said it before and we will say it again and again. You can do this! You can be organized. We’ve got many packs to choose from so pick another space and grab the pack. If you need one or two more of any item go on over to the a la carte section to complete your space.
